Day 1: Shira Gate (3400m) to Shira 1 Camp (3550m) Distance: 4km Hiking: 1-2h Elevation Gain: +150m The Shira Route begins with a drive to the Shira Gate, located on the western side of the mountain. From the gate, it's a short hike through moorland to Shira 1 Camp. This starting altitude is quite high, so it's important to take it easy to help acclimatize. Day 2: Shira 1 Camp (3550m) to Shira 2 Camp (3840m) Distance: 7km Hiking: 3-4h Elevation Gain: +290m Details: The trail continues across the Shira Plateau, offering expansive views of the landscape and the summit. The terrain is relatively flat, making for an easier day of hiking. Shira 2 Camp is located near a stream, providing a good water source. Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3840m) to Barranco Camp (3950m) via Lava Tower (4630m) Distance: 10km Hiking: 7-8h Elevation Gain: +790m (to Lava Tower), -680m (to Barranco Camp) Important acclimatization day. The trail ascends to the Lava Tower, a significant landmark at 4630m, then descends to Barranco Camp. The descent to a lower elevation helps with acclimatization, making this a key day for preparing for higher altitudes. Day 4: Barranco Camp (3950m) to Karanga Camp (3995m) Distance: 5km Hiking: 4-5h Elevation Gain: +45m The day starts with the climb of the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable rock scramble. After conquering the wall, the trail features several ascents and descents through the valleys before reaching Karanga Camp. Day 5: Karanga Camp (3995m) to Barafu Camp (4673m) Distance: 4km Hiking: 4-5h Elevation Gain: +678m The trail to Barafu Camp traverses an alpine desert. This day is relatively short to allow for plenty of rest in preparation for the summit attempt. Barafu Camp serves as the base camp for the final ascent. Day 6: Barafu Camp (4673m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) and descent to Mweka Camp (3100m) Distance: 17km (6 km ascent and 11 km descent) Hiking: 10-14h Elevation Gain: +1222m (ascent), -2795m (descent) The summit push begins around midnight. The climb to Uhuru Peak is challenging and involves steep sections. Reaching the summit at sunrise offers stunning views. After celebrating at the peak, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a rest and then continue to Mweka Camp. Day 7: Mweka Camp (3100m) to Mweka Gate (1630m) Distance: 10kmHiking Time: 3-4 hours Elevation Loss: -1470m The final day involves descending through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. At the gate, you'll receive your certificate of achievement.
